More details about the European Academy of Bolzano/Bozen Institute for Minority Rights [PDF]
The Institute for Minority Rights has stood for intensive research and practice in the area of international minority protection for over 15 years. Initiated from the succesful model of the South Tyrolean autonomy our handpicked team of lawyers and political scentists have earned an internationally well established reputation due to their extensive experience with minority law cases and models for minority protection.
The Institute has conducted extensive research in the field of comparative minority protection in Europe, inter-community conflicts and multi-level governance in South-East Europe, as well as EU integration and enlargement. The research and documentation activities of the institute also serve as a basis for its consultancy on minorities and autonomies as well as consultancy on the integration of migrants.
Moreover the Institute is a headquarter of the European Association of Daily Newspapers in Minortiy and Regional Languages MIDAS
As for the applied research two most recent projects are to be mentioned. In 2006 the Institute in cooperation with nine other partners from EU and Balkan countries was granted funding through FP6 Program for the project „Human and Minortiy Rights in the Life cycle of Ethnic Conflicts (MIRICO)”. The overall objective of this project was to analyse which status human and minority rights did and do have in all phases of ethnic conflicts and in the phase of reconstruction and reconcliliation.
In 2008 an FP7 project on regional instruments for the protection of human and minority rights in Europe and South Asia – EURASIA-Net has started and is currently under implementation with 7 partners from Europe and South Asia. The project follows up the Euro-Asian cooperation established in the already finalized project „Europe-Asia exchange project on experneices of the politics of recognition” (2003-2006), raising awareness within South Asian NGOs on minority protection issues.
About Bolzano/Bozen
Bolzano in Italian, Bozen in German. Founded by the Romans in 14 BC the today’s capital of the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol belonged for centuries to the Austrian Empire and only after World War I became part of Italy. Often defined as gateway to the Dolomite mountains, it is a melting pot of Italian, German and Ladin cultures, languages and cuisines. Surrounded by mountains and wine yards, the town of Bolzano/Bozen with bike paths covering an area of 40 kilometers is an ideal place for sport and nature enthusiasts! What can intrigue researchers working in Bolzano/Bozen? Management and preservation of natural resources, minority issues and multilingualism as well as over 5.000 years old Ötzi mummy are high on the research Agenda. In short: a perfect place for experimenting science in labs and outdoor!
