More details about EURAC Institute for Renewable Energy and the Workshop [PDF]

The Institute for Renewable Energy supports industry partners in the implementation and launch of innovative energy technologies by offering services such as the monitoring of pilot and demonstration plants, test in in-house laboratories as well as system simulation and optimisation. Thus, the institute is able to ensure its partners a head start in the market. Furthermore it offers support for decision makers and communities in strategical decisions on energy development. The fields of major interest are solar energy, especially solar air
conditioning and photovoltaics, as well as the energy in buildings. The mission of the Institute for Renewable Energy consists of innovative and interdisciplinary research and development in cooperation with local and international partners in order to promote technologies making use of renewable energy as well as efficient energy measures. Research projects are chosen according to market demands. The institute collaborates closely with leading European research institutes. Major priority is given to the ensuring of independence, neutrality and accuracy.

Currently the Institute for Renewable Energy includes around 20 researches and is involved as partner in 8 international projects. Three projects in the frame of the International Energy Agency in the field of (solar) thermal cooling and net zero energy buildings, one Intelligent Energy Europe project (SolarCombiPlus – project leader) and one Asia - Europe cooperation project. Further two European FP7 projects are running: SMOOHS (Smart Monitoring of Historic Structures), aiming at the development of competitive tools for monitoring and control of historical buildings (like wireless sensor networks and new miniature sensor technologies) in order to minimize the need of invasive installations and ALONE (Small Scale Solar Cooling Device), aiming to improve solar cooling technologies by developing a unified centralized control and monitoring unit which will be implemented in four test set ups using different technology in different European countries.

Further information on running projects, scientific publications and staff can be found on institutes’ home page www.eurac.edu

About Bolzano/Bozen

Bolzano in Italian, Bozen in German. Founded by the Romans in 14 BC the today’s capital of the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol belonged for centuries to the Austrian Empire and only after World War I became part of Italy. Often defined as gateway to the Dolomite mountains, it is a melting pot of Italian, German and Ladin cultures, languages and cuisines. Surrounded by mountains and wine yards, the town of Bolzano/Bozen with bike paths covering an area of 40 kilometers is an ideal place for sport and nature enthusiasts! What can intrigue researchers working in Bolzano/Bozen? Management and preservation of natural resources, minority issues and multilingualism as well as over 5.000 years old Ötzi mummy are high on the research Agenda. In short: a perfect place for experimenting science in labs and outdoor!
